General questions

Q: How can I get access to the iRATS system? Are there any introductory course offered?

A: Please refer to the “iRATS Introductory courses” section. After a short hands-on training session you will receive your personal iRATS account details including login and password.

 

Q: How can I make sure that notifications from iRATS are sent to my deputy during my absence?

A: Unfortunately, iRATS does not provide a standardized method to register deputies. Nonetheless, there are several possibilites to ensure that notifications can be read by another person during your absence, although it is indispensable for that person to be a member of the same iRATS project(s).

  1. A report, listing all not yet acknowledged notifications, is provided in iRATS. You will find it in the menu "Reports" in the subcategory "Animals".
    Investigators are able to check all notifications of projects they are member of, as long as they haven't been acknowledged. We recommend to check this report on a daily basis to ensure a proper processing of the notification's information.
     
  2. Create a rule in your email program that forwards all iRATS notifications to your deputy's email address.
     
  3. If you are absent for a longer time period, you can transfer your animals to another person. If you do a "self performed" animal transfer task, please do not forget to inform the responsible animal caretaker(s), as they might have trouble finding your cages after the transfer. Another possibility you can create an animal transfer work order. (PDF, 390 KB)

 


Licences

Q: How can I make sure that my new/extended license is accessible in iRATS?

A: Your assigned LASC veterinarian will automatically receive a copy of your approved license from the program eTV. The LASC veterinarian will then instruct our offices to (re-)activate or add your new license in iRATS.

 

Q: I would like to order animals via iRATS, but I am not able to enter the necessary information. What is wrong?

A: Most likely you do not yet have access to a project. You can only order animals if you have access to at least one project. Check if your project is selectable from the drop-down box within the “animal orders” section (please first select the appropriate license and then search for the project). If this is not possible, please get in touch with your license holder or the group leader of the corresponding license.

 

Q: I am a group leader and I don't know how to create a new project or how to add a person from my group to a licence/project.

A: Log on as group leader or licence holder.

  • Open the menu "Licences",
  • search for ALL licences.
  • Select the licence you want to edit.
  • Verify your selection using the link "License members (Form A - Appendix)" the list of the licence members and add new names - if necessary Click the link << back to return to the licence page.
  • Go back to the licence page and scroll to the link "Manage projects and projects members".
  • From the drop-down menu you can add for each project some or all licence members to a project.
  • If there is no project visible, click on the link "Create a new project".
  • Add all mandatory fields and save the project.
  • Now you will find on the bottom of the page the drop- down menu from which you can add some or all licence members to the project.

Once a project has been created you (and all project team members) can select the licence for an animal transfer or for an animal order.

 

Q: How can I change the licence or project information of my animals if I'm working in the animal room.

A: You need to logon to the PDA-interface and then:

  • scan the cage and select the animal(s) with the checkboxes.
  • From the drop-down menu "New task for the selected animals" select the menu "Advanced transfer",
  • press "Execute"
  • scroll down and select a target licence and a target project
  • save the task.
  • Go back to the cage view and select the link "Label" or "Label+",
  • put the PDA back to the charging cradle,
  • press the button "Print label with zebra" or "print label with PC" (for tablets and notebooks etc.) and stick the label over the old one.

 


Facility management

Q: How can I add a new strain name to the system?

A: Navigate to the menu “strain” and click on the link “propose new strain”. Please note that the official strain name should follow the nomanclature rules. Please refer to Strain Nomenclature (PDF, 19 KB) and Nomenclature guide (PDF, 350 KB).

 

Q: How can I find the owner of a specific strain?

A. Please write an e-mail to the technical manager (andreas.rettich@lasc.uzh.ch).

 


Work orders

Q: How can I transfer animals from my breeting facility to my exerimental rooms

A: You have to choose an animal transfer work order. Please refer to the documentation Create an animal trasfer work order. (PDF, 390 KB)

 

Q: What do I have to consider if I want to transfer animals with a Work order from LASC-Schlieren, LASC-UZI, BZL, or FOS to ETH or to another animal facility that is not working with iRATS?

A: You have to choose the "export work order".

or

you have to choose one of the proposed “Export rooms” as target room in the animal transfer work order. This is important, because the status of the animals needs to be changed to “exported” (note: this is NOT an animal export!). By choosing one of the export rooms this is done automatically.

 


Animal orders

Q: Is it mandatory to order my animals via iRATS?

A: Yes, the whole ordering process is fully integrated into iRATS. You must at all times maintain a detailed real-time overview of your orders. Unfortunately we are not able to accept orders via e-mail.

Q: I would like to order animals from my breeding colony in Schlieren. How can I proceed?

A: Because you are already the owner of these animals this is not considered as an animal order. Please send an animal transfer work order and your animals will be transferred to your facility. Download manual "How to create an animal trasfer work order" (PDF, 390 KB)

 


Animals

Q: How can I see a breeding history of a breeding pair?

A: You should use the report "breeding report". Define your search criteria (e.g. the project or strain etc.) Important: please define a breeding period (bottom of page).

 

Q: How can I change the project information with the PC?

A: Select the menu "animals", search for the animals by restricting to one project. Select the animals you want to change the project information for. Add them to the "selected animals". Scroll to the bottom. Use "transfer animals". Press continue and select "advanced transfer" from the drop-down menu (and wait 2-3 seconds until the page is completely loaded). On the following page you can select the new project (and all other changes you want to make). Save your changes. Beware, that if the project has changed and the cages should receive NEW LABELS.

Q: How can I see the amount of cages or animals per strain?

A: Please use the "strain report" function.

Personal information - select language

Q: After my first login the user interface language is German. How can I change this setting?

A: Select the menu item "Personal information“. At the bottom of the page you can select a different language.
